Weather in Antarctica
Antarctica is a continent that is covered in ice, like a blanket with little rocks. Even though it is covered with ice, it is classified as a desert because it is one of the driest continents in the world and is the fifth largest continent. It is known for its extremely low temperatures, which is why people visit the Antarctic Peninsula where the climate is moderate. West Antarctica has higher temperatures than East Antarctica because of the higher elevation.
It has one of the coldest weather in the world. The temperature can reach to -32C, where its average temperature is -55C. It is extremely cold all year-round, with an average of -20C to -60C monthly. The highest temperature ranges from -1C to -36C, which is still very cold because during mid-Winter it gets a month of no sun. However in mid-Summer it only gets a month of sun. During that time, Summer has an average temperature of -35C.
Spring is one of the most common breeding season, because it is near December which means eggs can hatch in a hot environment. Since the temperature is warmer, photographers and travellers visit Antarctica. It’s the best time for photographers because of larger icebergs and beautiful snow. For travellers, it’s a great time to come before the ice packs are spoilt from nests and poo and the weather is tolerable.
In Fall, the temperatures drop but stay above 0C. For travellers, they are able to see colourful patterns in the sea from frost. The ice cliffs are coloured green and pink because of snow algae.
Antarctica has the coldest climate in the whole world. It has the lowest naturally occurring temperature on Earth of -89C, because of this, when you throw boiling water in the air it will instantly turn into ice. In order to forecast the weather, the weather forecasters use a balloon, which is thrown in the air and judged on how far the wind pushes it away.
When swimming in Antarctica, it can be dangerous because its temperature is lower than -10C. If you choose to swim, you will need a special suit because this suit can withstand such low temperatures. You will also need an extra oxygen tank because the temperature can freeze it. Normally you can just jump in, but in this case there is ice that you have to drill through. This ice is 5km thick, so you can’t use an ordinary shovel, but a machine drill that will be able to cut through such thick ice. Although, there are people who dive into the water like scientists who use a R.O.V to dive deeper than what humans can. They do this to see if there is living plants under the sea.
Dry valleys used to be covered with snow, as they are formed with snow and ice. It you go under a dry valley, there is water, where the deeper you swim, the warmer it’ll get. There are also whirlpools that occur in special months of the year and large ice bergs. The low temperature freezes the water which turns into ice and creates some of the largest ice bergs in the world.
People come to Antarctica to research about Space because of its clear air. There is clear air because there is little pollution, which is why global warming doesn’t affect the temperature of Antarctica as much. They also come for their whale, bird and seal sighting.
